A Leader MUST Lead, and Lead, by Example
They consider a leader is someone who can deligate well, someone who can
administrate well, someone who can keep people inspired. While all of these
characteristics are leadership-like, they are not at the core of what a true
leader is.
A TRUE leader, leads best, by example.
Have you ever heard the saying, "I can't hear what you are saying because the
life that you are living is speaking so loudly" ? Consider this the next time you
want to be a leader, you are seeking a leader, or you are calling yourself, a leader.
Do you live what you are saying? Do you lead by example? Do you demonstrate
not only excellence in what you do, but integrity in being humble enough to even
share what you don't do well and are learning to do better?
The best leaders I know are continual students.
I will never forget a 30 minute coaching session I had with William, the "Redwood Tree" Bailey. I call him that because in my mind he is a PILLAR, a strong, Redwood tree that has grown so
strong, tall and solid he LIVES what he speaks, he demonstrates what he teaches
and he can be leaned upon. He gave me a 30 minute coaching session in April of
2004. He asked me one question, "Do you think you have learned all there is to learn
in this industry?" I said emphatically, "No way! I have so much to learn and when I
learn all of that, I have so much MORE to learn!" He paused, and He said, "You my
dear, will be a leader , if you never stop learning. "
I will never forget that as long as I live. If you get to the point where you think you
have learned as much as there is- and now it's time to act on all of your learning, I hate
to break it to you, but you have just hit the END of your career.
A leader, must lead, and lead, by example.
- Want your people to value training? Then BE TRAINED no matter how good you get.
- Want your people to value schedules? Then be one who sticks to your schedules.
- Want your people to be kind? Then be considerate.
- Want your team to stick together during tough times? Then be the first to cling tight.
- Want your team to collaberate together on decisions? Then be the first to ask for opinions.
I am sure you get my point. A Leader must first lead by example.
SPEAK loudly and LIVE what you speak, boldy. That is true leadership!
